RAFW: Celebs Front Row and at the Rosemount Bar

Posted: 09 May 2011 10:03 PM PDT

By Chloe Schneider

If you want to spot celebs at fashion week, naturally your eyes turn to the front row but when the stars are taking a break from the shows, they turn their eyes to the gorgeous Rosemount bar for a drink and a catch up. We’ve got all the goss from both star-studded areas of RAFW.

Rosemount Botanicals Wine Bar
The Rosemount Botamicals Wine Bar is the place to unwind, make contacts and have a drink inbetween shows. Located at the Overseas Passanger Terminal right in the middle of all the action, the exclusive bar was a home away from home for many celebs during RAFW.
Jessica Gomes, model and this years Rosemount Fashion Ambassador, was a regular at the bar, catching up with people and making the rounds.Designers including Bec Cooper, Bridget Yorston, Terry Biviano, Karla Spetic and Gail Elliot with her model BFF Yasmin Le Bon took time out to relax at the bar and network with stars such as Annaliese Braakenseik, Pip Edwards and Kate Waterhouse or chat to this generations taste-making bloggers like Susie Lau of Style Bubble and Tommy Ton of Jak and Jill.

Show Stoppers
We think we might know what some Aussie stars will be wearing come summer time…
April Rose Pengilly and boyfriend Tim Commandeur were practically linked at the hip during the Carl Kapp show and another star couple, Nathan Joliffe of The Amazing Race and girlfriend Erin McNaught took in the bright colour at the Bianca Spender show
Spender’s Mum, Carla Zampatti, looked on with pride from the front row as well.Later on at the Camilla and Marc show held inside the State Theatre Sophie Lowe, Gracie Otto, Emma Lung, Pia Miranda and Joel Edgerton were all spotted in the huge crowd.
Lara Bingle Front Row and Jennifer Hawkins Runway Ready
Thursday’s Ellery show had attendees in a flurry as Lara Bingle and friend Teresa Palmer took seats in the front row. Lara wore an all black man-style tuxedo to her first RAFW appearance while Teresa chose a bronze frock. The two looked on as Jennifer Hawkins strode down the runway in a bright yellow Ellery gown that shone even brighter than her dazzling engagement ring.
Hawkins looked right at home on the runway and the crowd were thrilled to see her partake in the hugely anticipated show.

Josh Goot’s A-list Audience
Josh Goot’s show attracted an impressive array of big names including Lara Bingle who changed out of a suit and into a form-fitting dress for the event.
Lara’s ex Michael Clarke was in attendance with his new girlfriend Kyly Boldy.
RAFW regulars Ruby Rose, Sophie Lowe, Erin McNaught and Gracie Otto were also spotted in the crowd for the amazing show.

Fashion Commentator Glynis Traill-Nash Gives Her Verdict On Australian Fashion Week

Posted: 09 May 2011 10:03 PM PDT

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week is over for another year. Despite the exhausting schedule, there were only a handful of true “fashion moments” this year. Toni Maticevski’s return to the schedule after a five-year absence, during which he has shown in New York a number of times, provided the heart-in-mouth moment of the week (and yes, there may even have been a few tears). Alongside his couture gowns, Maticevski also showed his first collection of ready-to-wear (aside from his capsule collections for Myer) in a number of years. For this, our wardrobes thank him.

Dion Lee continued his run as the most technically outstanding designer of his generation (and
many in generations above him). The choice of venue—the Sydney Opera House, the same as last year—may have worked against him in terms of his wow moment. There was no doubt the collection was one of the best of the week, but a different venue would have put the focus back on the clothes and stopped reminding us of his previous year’s triumph.

Therese Rawsthorne’s Twin Peaks–inspired collection was an incredible marriage of concept and execution, all of which was covetable, wearable and original.

An abandoned car warehouse provided a gritty backdrop to Josh Goot’s collection, which again showed his mastery of shape, colour and digital printing. The only concern here was some of the fuller silhouettes—if models can look lumpy, what chance do the rest of have?

Lisa Ho’s supremely wearable collection was a highlight, again using a bold colour palette, luxurious fabrics and her signature prints. Never one to slavishly follow trends, Ho’s pieces will keep their owners happy for years to come.

Fernando Frisoni sent out a collection that was cool, concise, minimal and sexy. The colour palette was restricted to white, black, gold and silver, but there was nothing restrictive about the clothes, with their sporty lines and luxurious fabrications.

Kirrily Johnston’s collection was tough, sexy and true to her signature style. In particular, her leather tunic dresses were the bomb.

Manning Cartell showed off a collection that had moments of great originality, while also ticking off a number of trends. And in a week where many designers were doing similar things, the Manning sisters showed the rest how they should have been done.

Two designers who have already built up quite the following showed for the first time at RAFW. Carl Kapp kept to a singular message, showing off his masterful draping skills in a range of fluid silk dresses in a cavalcade of colours.

Meanwhile, Yeojin Bae sent out a typically well-edited collection that was sophisticated and sexy, featuring flattering, pin-tucked skirts and body-skimming dresses in brights and nudes.

Ones To Watch

Breakout stars of the week included Magdalena Velevska, whose folk-art prints and, particularly, her fluorescent pleated dresses should see her finally get the recognition she deserves.

Karla Spetic showed an assured and pared-back collection that focused on colour, print and cutting technique.
Of the New Generation shows, Christopher Dobosz, who last year appeared in the TAFE student show, proved that he is, indeed, a big talent. His precision cutting, perfect finishes and digital print matching were highlighted in a range that was both commercial and sophisticated.

Beyonce Wears the Wrong Dress Again

Posted: 09 May 2011 10:03 PM PDT

We don’t understand why Beyonce keeps on holding on to the fishtail gowns when they’re not even a fashion trend. Much worse, these make her look very wrong. Fashion police, help!

No wonder she and her hubby Jay-Z were booed at the Met Gala red carpet, for her fishtail Emilio Pucci dress was just bad. It was too skimpy, and it set her curves at the wrong places, which should not be the case. And it seems as if she cannot breathe in her outfit. Good thing her better half kept his looks dapper and classic, and her served not as her best accessory, but rather her saving grace.
