Parody Video Released On Anniversary Of BP Oil Spill

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 10:03 PM PDT

Still pissed about the BP Gulf oil spill? Yeah, we are too! It has officially been over a year, yet an unusual amount of dead marine life has been washing onshore, and in spite of reports that the food and water is now safe for consumption, the locals remain doubtful.

Which is why this parody video called, “I Know What You Spilled Last Summer” was a welcome one! The concept comes from the slasher film, “I know What You Did Last Summer” and the comparison to BP oil execs trying to cover their tracks is shockingly similar to the plot of the horror film.

The video was created as part of the launch for Counterspill, which is a website dedicated to highlighting the impact of energy disasters.

"Counterspill was created so we can actually make changes in the wake of disaster,” said Counterspill co-founder and filmmaker Chris Paine. “We want to constructively counter industry and governmental spin on these disasters so we don’t keep returning to business as usual. These should be opportunities to accelerate our renewable energy future.”

Perhaps the best part is that the video is actually funny, and comedy tends to be a medium that everyone can relate to. Also, it has a cameo from eco-warrior Ed Begley Jr.!

Megan Gale Lashes Out on Twitter, Official Royal Wedding Program and more

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 06:04 PM PDT

By Chloe Schneider

As the Royal Wedding draws nearer, more and more details are being revealed and we’re becoming more excited than ever. Meanwhile, back home, Megan Gale stands up for herself after hearing some nasty comments at a café. Finally, Evan Rachel Wood declares her bisexuality.

Megan Gale’s Twitter Rant
Green-eyed model Megan Gale would surely have had a run in with a few green-with-envy girls during her career and it seems she’s fed up.
The recently crowned ‘Who Magazine Most Beautiful Woman of 2011’ just today encountered a couple of girls who were less than supportive. Rather than grin and bear it, Gale took to her 26,000-follower strong twitter page to vent. “Sitting in a café listening to 2 girls reading out loud in paper re: Who Mags’ Most Beautiful Issue. They are commenting on me.”
“They don’t know that I can hear them,” she goes on, “And they are being a little kind but mostly nasty. What would you do in this situation??” What followed was seven more tweets which outlined how the girls were “really dissecting” her looks, causing Gale to lift her head and sweetly say hi and then, “you should be careful what you say guys, you never know who might be listening.”
We love Gale all the more for this; she stood up for herself without getting angry or nasty. We could all learn a thing or two from her grace!

Official Royal Wedding Program Revealed
The cover of the “Official Programme” of the Royal Wedding has just been revealed along with the news that the entire thing will be available for watchers to download 24 hours before the big day.
The program features both Prince William’s Coat of Arms on the front and Kate Middleton’s newly created coat of arms on the back. Inside the pages a full Order of Service will appear along with a personal message of thanks from the couple and a yet-to-be-seen photo of the couple taken by famed photographer Mario Testino.

Evan Rachel Wood Declares Bisexuality
Following in the footsteps of her True Blood co-star Anna Paquin, Evan Rachel Wood has let the world know she is bisexual. In an interview with Esquire magazine, she not only reveals this but also uncovers some of the mystery behind her attraction to ex-fiancé Marilyn Manson.
“I grew up in love with David Bowie. So I was always into very androgynous things. Guys, girls… I’m into androgyny in general.” We can certainly see how someone who is so attracted to androgyny would see Marilyn Manson as attractive!
She ended the interview with the line, “I’m up for anything. Meet a nice guy, meet a nice girl.”
The 23-year-old star is still in the limelight, starring with Kate Winslet in HBO’s Mildred Pierce, in Robert Redford’s The Conspirator and George Clooney’s upcoming film The Ideas of March. She’s come a long way since Thirteen!

Nike Zoom Crisp Sneaker

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 06:01 PM PDT

maharam zoom maharam 02 Nike Zoom Crisp Sneaker
Let the summer shoe-drooling commence. The Nike Zoom is presented with a Maharam collaboration to bring you an new, lightweight shoe body that’s an easy pick for linen and cotton. It’s really hard to match 100% linen pants with any sneaker-type shoe, but with these, I can see it. Maharam’s a textile company in New York, so they brought the textured upper to the Nike body in linen, horsehair, and leather touches. Gorgeous, heat-friendly, and superbly stitched for the serious buyer.

You don’t have to live in Miami or Malibu to find the most use out of these. The naturally-colored upper is an easy combination with well-worn denim (I’m picturing Levi’s that have bleached themselves out at the knee and thigh), boating-type longer shorts, paper-thin tees, or a vintage maroon sweater. The uppers don’t strike me as high-maintenance, instead appearing casual, packable for travel, creative, and comfortable.

Nike will be releasing the Zoom Tennis Classics through a select set of stockists, and they are tempting. What did not tempt me was the Dunk High Premium collab with Maharam, which you can see here. This look fails where the Nike Zoom has excelled, looking fussy, unusual, and slightly silly. [via acquire]

Crazy Cool

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 02:04 PM PDT

But the questions is: Would you wear it?

The process of turning waste into something wearable has long been a visionary goal of eco fashion. Under the guise of upcycled fashion are haphazard DIY missteps that have cost the movement dearly in perception and respect. And yet, within this arena we do find innovation and creativity.

Take a look at some of the designs from Central St Martin's Sustainable Catwalk jewelery show, 'Tomorrow's Chip Papers,” held on April Fool's Day. Challenged to create beautiful, earth-friendly adornments from garbage bags, twigs and discarded kebab sticks, the BA Jewelery Design students created striking originals for the catwalk. There seems to be no shortage of imaginative fantasies, but the question remains: Would you wear it?

As we celebrate Earth Week, let’s reflect on some West Coast fashion ideas that looked crazy at first but have transcended the realm of unwearable imaginative fantasy to represent what upcycled fashion could and should be – edgy, zero waste, forward-thinking and quite simply, crazy cool.

Taking fashion concepts to new heights, San Francisco-based design and manufacturing shop Turk+Taylor's latest collection is cut from a retired hot air balloon. Salvaged from Colorado and shipped to a friend's warehouse in San Francisco, designer duo Mark Lee Morris and Andrew Soernsen unfurled "what seemed like miles of rip stock nylon," to find they had over 400 yards of uniquely color-blocked fabric to create distinctive windbreakers and dresses that soar in a season of colorful outerwear and bold patterns.

In what he terms "a moment of clarity," Dustin Page, the designer behind Oakland label, Platinum Dirt, looked at the worn yet durable leather seats of his Volvo, and saw the perfect material to make his handmade and highly desired VIN jackets made of reclaimed vintage leather auto upholstery from old Cadillacs, Lincolns, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, and more. I've never seen one of these fail to get people excited whenever they're on view at fashion events. And thus explaining why the pair – partner Aaron Parrish provides the business brains – quickly got the call from the Hollywood cool-guy set, including Jamie Foxx, Jeremy Piven and Adrian Grenier, requesting their own one-of-a-kinds. The lust-worthy women's version is sleek and tailored, beautifully toughening up any floaty feminine look.

The fashion world's hard sell goes hand in hand with the mass media. It's hard for any of us to resist consumerism when it is so alluringly presented in the glossies, making Nike's latest Nike Sportswear offering the Premium Print Pack sneaker for women, so deliciously ironic. The sneakers are made from actual recycled magazines that have been shredded and reconstituted. Launched this year, the shoes are a subscription slave’s best revenge.

Stewart+Brown is teaming up with Marie Claire’s Amanda Hearst & PAPER’s Luigi Tadini for Riverkeeper in honor of Earth Day!

StewartBrown_RiverKeeper_05

“Clean drinking water is a basic human right and it's a shame that for many it is considered a luxury. As a New Yorker, I realize how lucky I am to have access to drinkable water and it is almost entirely due to the efforts of Riverkeeper. Less than 50 years ago, there were 20 mile stretches of the Hudson considered "dead". Today, it is one of the richest bodies of water on earth. I am so proud to work with an organization who's immense success in litigating polluters has bettered my life as well as the lives of those around me. The battle continues, but Riverkeeper will never quit, and for that we are all forever indebted to them.” – Amanda Hearst

There are plenty of wonderful pieces, all made from sustainable fabrics and dyed with non-polluting dyes. See my favorite selections from the early Spring collection below:
