Flood Proof: Emergency Dams Turn Homes into Tiny Islands Posted: 12 Jun 2011 06:08 PM PDT Waterfront is better than waterlogged, reasoned residents facing floodwaters along a smaller tributary of the Mississippi river, many of whom went to great lengths in protecting their properties from rising tides. Inverted moats of muddied sand and dirt stand guard, ringing yards or simply houses themselves – support structures, driveways and such were simply not worth saving to some, while others broadened their boundaries to accommodate these extras. Some of these improvised barriers reach as high as the Vicksburg home they guard, while walls of this kind generally mean boat-only access to get in or out. And there are no guarantees, either: if water levels rise high enough there is no retreat for vulnerable first floors and basements, perhaps whole houses if sufficiently weakened from the ordeal. Planning is important, but luck plays a (sometimes unfortunate) roll as well. In most cases, there is no second line of defense. (via DailyMail) Edit your submission |
WATCH: Orphaned Baboon Adopts Bush Baby at Kenyan Animal Orphanage Posted: 12 Jun 2011 06:04 PM PDT Animals seem to be able to communicate with each other on a much deeper level than any of us can understand, and for proof of the inter-species communication, look no further than a friendship that has formed between a bush baby and a yellow baboon at a Nairobi animal orphanage. The female baboon is just six-months-old and was abandoned in Maralal in Northern Kenya by its family, while the three-month-old bush baby was abandoned in central Kenya. Both were brought to the Kenya Wildlife Service center, and both have come to rely on and take care of each other. The union between two species is rare but not unheard of, as we’ve previously reported on a cat and barn owl who found each other, and a deer who became protective over a goose nest. “In the natural world they are very separated in terms of time,” Musyoki said, because the yellow baboon is active during the day, whereas the bush baby is nocturnal, “[but] in this captive environment because the two animals which are in distress, need each other for companionship, for friendship and play.” He also added that the pair will have to be separated as they grow older, but for now they have each other to cope with their new surroundings. Pippa Middleton Alex Loudon split Posted: 12 Jun 2011 06:00 PM PDT Pippa Middleton Alex Loudon split
The Duchess of Cambridge’s sister has not been seen in public with Alex since he was invited as a guest to the royal wedding of Kate and Prince William. ‘It is common knowledge in their close circle of friends that Pippa and Alex have recently split up,’ a friend told the Sunday Times. The 27-year-old – and her bottom – have become the talk of the town since she was seen walking behind Kate in her white bridesmaid dress on the day she wed Prince William. ‘P-Middy’ has since been snapped with various male friends, including her ex-boyfriend and close friend, George Percy, as they holidayed in Madrid. They dated while at Edinburgh University, where they were also flatmates, and have been friends for nearly ten years. The pair were spotted with friends, while Pippa’s boyfriend was nowhere to be seen – and has not been seen with Pippa since the royal wedding on April 29. Alex, 30, is the son of the Duke of Northumberland, one of the richest men in Britain, and he and Pippa have been dating for about a year. Alex is a pal of Prince William's from Eton, the most prestigious boys' school in the UK. He works as a stockbroker in London after retiring from playing cricket in 2007. Edit your submission |

Michael Vartan Offers Dog Care Tips for New PETA Ad Posted: 12 Jun 2011 02:06 PM PDT Actor Michael Vartan may be best known for his roles on such TV shows as Hawthorne and Alias, but the job he takes most seriously is acting as a responsible pet owner toward his pet pooch, Millie. In a new ad for PETA, the 42-year-old offers tips to pet owners on how to make the life of mans best friend a little brighter. The footage shows Vartan and Millie out on a walk, being playful and getting plenty of exercise, something an ideal pet owner should always make time for. “When I take her on a walk, I make sure she gets to sniff as long as she wants,” he says. “I always remember this is her walk, so I don’t pull on her and I don’t rush her.” Vartan finishes the piece by adding, “These things may seem small to us, but to our dogs they mean the world.” Do you have any dog care tips to share and pass on to other pet owners? Cardboard Mounted Deer Heads for the Eco Conscious Decorator Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:02 AM PDT Enjoy taxidermy without the guilt, with a recycled (and recyclable) cardboard deer head. In centuries past, mounted deer (or other animal) heads were considered a type of trophy – an item that illustrated the skills and capabilities of the hunter who killed the deer. If a man had a deer head on his wall, you would assume that he was virile, manly, capable of taking care of his little woman and kids, and probably a few other things as well. But what is the modern, eco-conscious vegetarian man to do when he too wants to use interior design to demonstrate his masculine, yet environmentally sensitive, attributes? Play on the classic mounted deer head and hang a “green” cardboard version. The recycled cardboard Eco Deer Head pictured above, made by Israeli design company Crembo, is assembled out of 20 pieces that are joined without the need for glue (thus making it easier to recycle when the owner’s interior design tastes have changed). The pieces of the Eco Deer Head also come in a flat pack, which reduces shipping and packaging resources. Crembo’s entire line of design products (which also includes the Eco Camel, Eco Bull, Eco Penguin, Eco Cat and Eco Dog) aims to be as green as possible, but not at the expense of whimsy and fun. In Crembo’s own words, they “create products with fun and interesting design elements that make people smile.” All of the cardboard creatures can be personalized by painting or decorating them. As playful as all their products (and creatures) are, nevertheless all of the company’s products are:

He turns the stone into a variety of sculptures, which then swell shelves of the museum gift shop. The most popular products are copies of figures, “complete” women. These figures were part of the set found during the excavation of the prehistoric temples of Malta.
