Lady Gaga: Cuckoo for Ferragamo Posted: 01 Aug 2011 10:05 PM PDT We all know Lady Gaga for her fashion antics, but this time around she tried to dress up normally and formally for her guest appearance on “The View.” However, she still took her fashion a little too far… by embracing Ferragamo from head to toe.
The fashion icon wore a straight cut black and white checkered suit from the Salvatore Ferragamo collection. Yes it looked prim and proper, but the same design was also used for her wide-rimmed hat, purse, nail color and spectacles. If only she could dye her hair with the design, she would. Good thing she didn’t though, as she opted for long platinum locks and strings of pearls. Photos by Wenn.com

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 10:03 PM PDT Christian Louboutin is famous for his shoes, which are beautiful right down to the finishing touch, the soles. Those red soles are a sign of beauty, luxury and a particular lifestyle. Many now see this to be a trademark of Christian Louboutin, which the company agrees with and takes very seriously. Seeing a flash of red walk past immediately brings Christian Louboutin to mind.
Yves Saint Laurent are reportedly planning to launch a range of shoes with red soles, and understandably Christian Louboutin are not pleased about this. This has ended up being a lawsuit and going to court, as Christian Louboutin claim that it's their trademark and exclusively known as theirs. The counter argument from YSL is that the French Court of the 1600s wore red-soled shoes, and is therefore not a trademark of Louboutin. To me, this doesn't seem as substantial an argument as another example that was pointed out to me at university. This argument is a designer called Elsa Schiaparelli. Schiaparelli was known for surreal fashion, for teaming odd elements together. An example of her surrealist fashion was the 'Shoe Hat', designed for the Autumn/Winter 1937-1938 collection. The significant point of this hat is the shoe that's on top, which has a red sole. One example of this hat is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (which does state that it has a fuschia-pink heel). Schiaparelli’s ‘Shoe Hat’ definitely existed before Louboutins red soles, and could have been the inspiration. We could discuss all day what came first, and who has the sole use of a particular design feature. Perhaps Louboutin wasn't completely original with red soles, however there is no denying that it is now an element of design that is significant to them. No matter the designer, as discussed previously, fashion always looks back and nothing is void of outside inspirations. Edit your submission |

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 06:03 PM PDT By Fashion Commentator Glynis Traill-Nash Denim days Winter is still hanging in there as the spring collections start to fill stores—indeed, over the next two weeks both David Jones and Myer host their big season launches to get everybody excited about the coming season. One perfect transseasonal trend is denim—something many of us take for granted in the form of our favourite jeans to throw on when we can’t be bothered thinking of something more exciting to wear. Or maybe that’s just me. Skinny jeans are still being slid into by those with the confidence to pull off the look. This season you might also look for cropped versions, with or without ankle zips, as per Manning Cartell’s offering. Another great style is the high-waisted, flared or wide-legged jeans, perfect for channelling that 1970s vibe, especially when worn with a peasant blouse and floppy hat. Very Jane Birkin. (Lover and Wrangler offer great examples.) Ksubi has reintroduced its Kolors range of coloured denim, reigniting interest in this category—if you’re going to go there, look for super bright reds, greens and yellows to really make an impact. (Pink Zebra also has a good selection.) White jeans also look great come high summer, especially worn with colourful tops and stripes, and Mela Purdie has a good selection of these. Denim also works well in the rest of your wardrobe. A denim dress can be a cute addition to your wardrobe. Simple styles such as this example from camilla and marc work best in this fabric, or button-though, belted versions as per the ’70s favourite (Levi’s do a great one). The latter look particularly chic while it’s still chilly when underpinned with a black poloneck and worn with boots. Morrison sent out baggy blazers and cut-offs at Fashion Week in May, for a casual tailored look. And remember, if double denim is currently acceptable, why not try triple? I dare you.
Danish beauties Danish jewellery label Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen has announced Helena Christensen as the new face of the brand, which, as this photo can attest, is a rather appealing match. The jewellery brand has also launched its range of Lotus rings, which can be worn alone or in groupings or two or three. The colourful jube-like designs in different sizes are made with stones including tourmaline, moonstone, topaz and carnelian, while the metals include yellow or rose gold, silver and black silver. There are also matching earrings, pendants and colliers. A lovely way to add a little colour into your day. For more, see www.olelynggaard.com.
Cat lady Heidi Klum shows us the way to do leopard print. It’s something I’ve said before, but something that can’t be overstated: if you’re going to do a whole dress in leopard (this one from Dolce & Gabbana), best it’s in a demure cut—not too low-cut, not too short, not too much flesh—lest it look a little, well, you know what I’m saying. The addition of a punched-eyelet belt makes the look a little more rock ’n roll, but the high neckline, longer sleeves and knee length make this dress a winner.
Delicate delight And speaking of demure, Camilla Belle has nailed the ladylike look here with this floral Miu Miu dress. The gently puffed, longer sleeves bring just the slightest hint of volume to this elegant 1940s silhouette, and the subtle colours and print are divine. What makes the whole look even better are the slightly off-kilter accessories: while the satin clutch picks up on the print accent, it clashes slightly with the shoes, also from the label, whose chunky heels and round toe could be a little nanna if it weren’t for the sparkling finish. Posted: 01 Aug 2011 02:04 PM PDT Tara St James and Bahar Shahpar want to take their role as designers and entrepreneurs to a new role, that of teachers. How we evolve as professionals could quite easily make up a juicy short story, or in some cases, a stylish novel that would take us around the world. In the case of designers Tara St James (of Study New York) and Bahar Shahpar (designer for her own eponymous label), this writer would probably opt for the novel version having followed both for some time. The two are currently in the throes of an IndieGoGo campaign for funds they hope to elevate GUILDED, their newest enterprise, where the master plan is to become “the new industry standard for the way we think about design.” Sustainably fashioned design. I got to catch up with them at GUILDED this past week to see what was going on and what all the fuss was about. “With fashion, designers need to start attacking waste from the beginning and use good design and business to make better production. they also need to take a look at the people they work with full time,” says St James, referring to the unseen co-workers in the manufacturing process who help produce a collection. Right now GUILDED offers one to two classes a week that tackle many of the questions designers and companies new to the sustainable scene have. In their 101 Series: Sustainable Design Fundamentals including (but not limited to), Fibers & Fabric: An Analytical Comparison, Local Production: Building Efficient Supply Chains and Brand Positioning: Telling the Story of Sustainability, many of these questions are answered. While they currently hold the classes in GUILDED proper, the two hope the IndieGoGo funding, will enable them to offer more classes digitally so it’s less of a priority to offer a physical space to teach in and they can reach out to people all over the world. Check out their video on IndieGoGo explaining more abut what they’re hoping to accomplish with proper funding: Shahpar says what she hopes GUILDED will become is a place where people can come to understand about how they can create with a conscious. “Fashion has a direct impact on a lot of things, so we want students to see what knowledge can do and give them the power to do it themselves and not rely on corporate, that there are people like us working behind the scenes everywhere, working from the root of the system,” she says. St James agrees and adds that there’s a preconceived perception when designers are entering the eco-realm that they need to address everything when they first start out. “There’s a lot of confusion with design students and lots of sources being thrown at them and in that confusion is where they stop and don’t want to go any further. Here they can choose what’s right for them and we help give them the tools to go from there. We debunk the myth that it can’t be done,” St James says, adding that the label of “sustainability” also can be a crutch they lean on too heavily, while it should be an element of their design. GUILDED’s Work space in Manhattan. Shahpar and St James are passionate about what they do. You can hear it in their voices and the pace at which they speak. You realize by being there with them that this campaign isn’t just about donating, but supporting a business that is here to make an effective change, “not to just be a charitable cause.” “Every bit of information you learn about this is life changing,” says Shahpar, “For everyone.” To update, the goal is to raise $ 15,000 via IndieGoGo by August 6th to get everything off the ground. You can start by donating as little as $ 10, everything makes a difference and they’re a little more than halfway there so get on it. An Exclusive for EcoSalon readers who donate to GUILDED’S campaign is one of Study New York’s Zipper Cuffs. Be one of the first 10 people to give and mention in their comment that they read the EcoSalon piece and get this hot zipper cuff in addition to whatever incentive is being offered for the amount you donate!!

The Recycled Plastic Bike that Never Gets a Flat Tire Posted: 01 Aug 2011 02:02 PM PDT Dror Peleg’s recycled plastic bike will set you “Frii” from flat tires. You won’t be able to do the Tour de France with this colorful bike designed by Israeli student Dror Peleg, but you will definitely capture everyone’s attention. Like this green toilet also developed in Israel, and Hashim Al Sada’s solar generator developed specifically for Qatari campers, Frii is relatively cheap to produce and has the potential to make life a lot greener and happier for a large number of people. Using injection mold technology, this spunky Frii bicycle is made entirely from recycled plastic materials. Notice that apart from the stand, hardly any metal parts have been incorporated into the design, ensuring that it can be adapted from the materials available in any given location.
The tires are also made with injection mold technology, but instead of requiring air, they are completely solid. This means that it is impossible to get a flat! We’re not sure how these ride, but their cost, attractiveness, and general user-friendliness has us feeling pretty excited. We’d love to see these rolled out en masse on the streets of Tel-Aviv and elsewhere. :: PFSK Other Cool Eco-Designs on Green Prophet: Aya Kaya Has Fun with Sustainable Design Ecco Ukka Weaves Love, Magic and Recycled Materials into Fabric Jewelry Bedouin Home Spun Rugs on Show in Milan
