Fashion Commentator Glynis Traill-Nash On The Best Accessories For Spring/Summer 2011/12 Posted: 22 Aug 2011 02:03 AM PDT By Fashion Commentator Glynis Traill-Nash Shoe shine There’s a ‘40s flavour in the air this season. It’s more subtle than the ’50s, with less volume in skirts, waists fitted but not quite so nipped, gently fitting tops and blouses, and jackets with bold shoulders that predate the 1980s. Looking down, shoes are also taking up the ’40s feel, with thicker heels that aren’t (always) quite so teetering, rounder toes, often with ankle straps and T-bars. And the women of the 1940s were working platform soles well before we embraced them. Miu Miu’s glittery shoes are a modern take on the trend, while Gucci’s python heels (left) are at the sexier end of the spectrum. Maison Martin Margiela, Giorgio Armani, Diane Von Furstenberg, Christian Louboutin, Lipstik and Zimmermann have some great examples, from pumps to peep-toes.
Belt up A skinny belt is the perfect finishing touch to your spring ensembles. Donna Karan, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci and Dries Van Noten all cinched waists with them in their most recent autumn/winter shows, but for spring bright colours are the go. A pop-bright belt will contrast perfectly with a black dress, or you can add to a colour-blocked ensemble for extra punch. Miu Miu, Jigsaw and Cheap Monday have colourful belts that will nip things in, while David Lawrence has glossy belts in a range of colours, including this purple one (left, $ 39; davidlawrence.com.au).
Make a statement The quickest way to add glamour to your wardrobe is with a statement necklace. Think bold, think dazzling, thing BIG. (Think Lanvin, sigh!) Throw it on with a simple dress for a more formal evening, or with jeans a tee and a leather jacket for a fun night out. Hell, wear it out for breakfast if you like. The stores are awash with great pieces, from the bejewelled to the ornate, high end to supremely affordable. Brands including Lulu Frost, Tom Binns, Mezi, ManiaMania, Monet, House of Harlow and sass & bide have great examples. But my particular favourite is this slightly creepy necklace from Bottega Veneta (left, $ 4,380; 02 9239 0188). Remember, Big Brother is watching.
There’s a practical streak in bags this season. Suddenly it’s cool to have a useful cross-body bag that might fit even more than an iPad and a spare pair of ballet flats. Go figure. Proenza Schouler started it off a couple of seasons ago, and still have some very covetable examples, but other brands including Mulberry, J.Crew, A.P.C., Lanvin and Mossimo have been quick to pick up on the trend. Everything from schoolboy satchels to rucksacks and simple totes—all with extra-long straps—are suddenly the go. This one from Fun Accessories ($ 39.95; funaccessories.com.au) hits the spot.

Sneak Peak: Newest of 10 LEGO Architecture Building Sets Posted: 21 Aug 2011 06:03 PM PDT Adding to their growing collection of architectural LEGO sets, the latest in the line will be the famous Robie House, one of the American Institute of Architects’ top ten most significant works of architecture from the 20th Century. This Modernism-influenced, Prairie Style classic features quintessential Frank Lloyd Wright design choices including a strong horizontal emphasis, winding entryway and experiential rather than centralized interior plan – and hits the stores next month. Other LEGO buildings by America’s most well-known architect include the Guggenheim Museum, which spun the traditional flat-floored, rectangular-walled museum concept into a dynamic spiral … … as well as his most world-renowned work of all: Falling Water, a gorgeous stone-and-concrete house overhanging a waterfall in a picturesque forest. And finally, from the same LEGO Architecture Series: the Farnsworth House (another Moderist award-winner), the Empire State Building, Rockafeller Center, The White House in DC, Seattle’s Space Needle and the Sears Tower in Chicago. Regarding the newest set in the series, the Robie House: “All purchases directly support the restoration, preservation and education programs of the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust. LEGO Architecture products are also available at museum and specialty gift shops or online.” Edit your submission |

3 Makeup Color Combinations That Don’t Work (So Don’t Even Try Them) Posted: 21 Aug 2011 10:03 AM PDT What the mall makeup-counter ladies say isn’t always right. Come closer. We need to share something but we don't want the Internet to hear. Ready? Okay. Sometimes our makeup looks bad. Okay, really bad. Like, eighth-grade picture bad, when you're combining braces, big-framed glasses, and hair you haven't figured out quite how to tame yet. How does this happen into our adult years? We're not quite sure. Maybe we're swayed by catchy magazine layouts that promise the latest trends that don't translate off-page. (Or they do translate, but they read: clown.) Maybe we're influenced by a makeup artist who sits us in a department store chair and plies us with powders that look great under fluorescent lighting, but look fluorescent under the light of the sun. Or maybe, it's time for all of us to just take a stand and say NO MORE to certain makeup trends and tap into what feels right to us. Regardless, here’s a few combos we advise you steer 100 miles clear of. Modular Loop Chair Serves a Twelve-Fold Function Posted: 21 Aug 2011 10:02 AM PDT Click here to view the embedded video. The seven modular folds of the Loop Chair grant it a twelve-fold function. Modular: constructed with standardized units or dimensions for flexibility and variety in use. It’s the “flexibility and variety in use” part that makes modular design so sustainable, because if one item can be modified and serve a range of functions then you don’t need to use additional resources to create multiple objects. We’ve seen this concept applied to a number of designs – from modular toasters that allow for parts to be added based on the growth of your family, to modular women’s shoes with alternate heels, and even modular multipurpose furniture. The Loop Chair, designed by Israeli designer Boaz Mendel, is another such innovative modular design that brings us 12 different functions for the price of one item. A chaise-longue chair, a bookshelf, a coffee table, a television chair, a barstool – the Loop Chair can serve all of these functions and more. The design is flexible, yet surprisingly stable once fixed in its desired position (as you can see in the video clip above). The loop itself is made of seven boards of varying lengths. In Mendel’s own words, “the complete object is a platform for the creation of a wide variety of furniture. Folding the hinges and affixing the shape with the help of special connectors produces a different piece of furniture in each different state.” The design is intended to be simple enough for anyone to modify, but also comes with an instruction booklet to help with assembling the different shapes. A special case containing this booklet and rods that are not being used accompanies the product. Change the Loop Chair, according to Mendel, “with great ease and according to one’s personal whims and needs.” Read more about modular design::
