Sustainable Los Angeles: Fashion Pioneers And Emergents Posted: 15 Aug 2011 02:04 PM PDT Six L.A. designers get ready to ship their fall ’11 to boutiques worldwide. We get a sneak peek. Internationally recognized designers Karen Stewart and Howard Brown have been pioneering the sustainable fashion movement for nearly a decade now. Inspired by their love and respect for nature, their Fall 2011 collection draws on the nomadic lifestyle of keeping only what we need and value. This parallels their own belief that we should buy only quality items we absolutely love and that will last for many seasons. In addition to extending their popular pima and luxe organic cotton collection, this season the duo are also offering four Mongolian Cashmere styles and have added a novelty group of 100% organic cotton French terry and 100% organic cotton polished twill, unlike anything currently in the marketplace. For the past nine years, jewelery designer Ronni Kappos has been creating memorable one-of-a-kind pieces from her collection of vintage glass, most of which was made in Germany during the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Her work has been featured on the cover of Rolling Stone and in several television shows, but her proudest moment was giving a piece to Marc Jacobs at a red carpet event, which he wore for the remainder of the night. Recently influenced by Native American Indian themes, Kappos has incorporated diamond weaves, totems, and feather-like hoops into her Fall 2011 collection. We will continue to see a ton of color with this collection, as well as flat geometric shapes, flower shapes and more pendants. Emerging sustainable designer Natasha Gindin is proud of the fact that LAVUK clothing is sweatshop free and made locally in Los Angeles. In addition, for every garment purchased, a tree is planted on behalf of the California Wildfire ReLeaf program. Her Fall 2011 collection, Infinity, is influenced by the linear symmetry and crisp angles of the Art Deco movement, and was designed with closet longevity in mind (to be worn an ‘infinite’ number of times). Gindin has chosen to stick with jewel tones, intended to evoke an inner connectivity to one's youth, something she personally achieves through Tibetan meditation. Over the past couple of years, designer Lizz Wasserman has created sustainable collections inspired by the environment and art: from melting polar ice caps and exile in the desert, to photography and Russian constructivism. This time, Wasserman has been inspired by literature, particularly L.A’s “bad-girl” author of the 70s, Eve Babitz, and the recent Patty Smith memoir. Playing with shape and proportion, this season we can expect to see some oversized and fitted pieces, longer silhouettes and warm, saturated colors. Mi Capri, designed by illustrator Carrie Perlow, is a footwear collection which is as uniquely fashionable and artistic as the people who wear them. Her fall ’11 collection is called Old School Meets the New Wave, and each pair is hand crafted and manufactured in and by LA’s most talented cobblers and artisans whose skills have been honed over generations. The designer says “It's for people who like catching the new wave first.” Designed for a woman who exudes confidence, glamor, sex appeal, and independence, FROCK Los Angeles is an emerging sustainable ready-to-wear line from designer Victoria Tik. Her Fall 2011 collection combines vintage glamor with contemporary style, and features several fitted pieces with sexy scooped backs. Fashion Commentator Glynis Traill-Nash On Five Top Spring/Summer Trends, Now In Store Posted: 15 Aug 2011 02:03 PM PDT By Fashion Commentator Glynis Traill-Nash Despite the still-chilly temperatures, it is officially spring in fashion land. Certainly David Jones and Myer have reminded us of the fact with their huge season launches over the past two weeks. David Jones made the most of Miranda Kerr’s first post-baby catwalk outing in Australia, but the Myer catwalk was pretty sizzling, too, with Jen Hawkins looking, frankly, incredible. So, another round of store wars launches over, what will we be buying in store this season? Brights One of the biggest trends for the season is simple: colour. Lots of it. The brighter the better. Don’t shy away from pinks from fuchsia to neon (Matthew Eager, above at Myer, is a fan), tomato red, eye-popping tangerine, Klein blue and vivid purple. Other labels on the brights bandwagon include White Suede, Jac + Jack, Alex Perry, Yeojin Bae, Gary Bigeni, Bianca Spender, Akira, Carl Kapp and Arnsdorf. And the biggest tip: colour blocking. Wear two or three solid, bold brights together and no-one will miss your entrance.
Prints Prints are still going strong this season, particularly on dresses and tops and even trousers (see below). Digital printing has made the possibilities endless in terms of colour and can even create photo-realistic prints possible. Lisa Ho has long been a leader in prints, and this season a plethora of designers are showing brilliant prints, including White Suede, Ginger & Smart, Bec & Bridge and Camilla. Leopard print is still one of the biggest print trends of all, from Megan Gale’s Isola swimwear line to Kirrily Johnston’s collection, camilla and marc’s tailored suit and Little Joe Woman’s strapless maxi (left, at David Jones).
Printed trouser combos Printed trousers have been creeping in the past few seasons, but the difference this season is that they’re being paired up with matching jackets and tops. Part of this is thanks to the pyjama trend that is gaining strength internationally (but for how long?), but it goes beyond that to slick tailored suits. Bec & Bridge matched print trousers with matching shirts, while the trend was seen elsewhere at Lisa Ho (left, at David Jones), Willow, Ginger & Smart and Romance Was Born.
Pleats This is one of those stealth trends, one that you don’t really notice until you look back and realise that they will be everywhere this season. As Magdalena Velevska showed at Myer (left) pleats can be very fashion-forward when cut on interesting angles and created in intense colours. This season they were also embraced in large and small doses by Christopher Esber, Dion Lee, White Suede, Michael Lo Sordo, Kate Sylvester, Therese Rawsthorne, Gail Sorronda… You get the message. Time to make like Issey Miyake: Pleats Please!
White Once all that colour has left your mind reeling and your eyes in need of some respite, you’ll need to embrace the other huge trend for the season: white. Plain, clean, crisp white. Think of it as a wardrobe refresher. Akira showed off elegant white at the David Jones parade (left), while other Australian designers saying it’s all-white include Zimmermann, Michael Lo Sordo, Fernando Frisoni, Carla Zampatti, Lover, Gail Sorronda and Flannel. Kate Middleton displayed quite the eclectic style while chatting up friends at the park. The future princess donned a soft blue v-neck sweater with a large heart pendant and belted blue jeans. Kate tossed on a cowboy hat for a statement-making touch.
Kate traveled in style with a large maroon leather duffle bag and a khaki tote while heading to her car. Going for a matchy-matchy look, Kate wore a maroon floral chiffon skirt with buckled flats and a white spring-time blouse.
In glamorous British fashion, Kate wore a stand-out decorative hat for Nicholas Van Cutsem’s wedding to Alice Patton. Kate’s love of blue really starts to show here with her paisley jacquard coat, navy satin pumps and snake embossed clutch, all in matching blue tints.
Kate opted to wear blue for another wedding, choosing a vibrant cobalt silk cocktail dress for the occasion. The British beauty looked sophisticated for the event with a black blazer and suede pumps.
For the Christmas reception in aid of the Teenager Cancer Trust, Kate opted to go black and white in a Temperley London cocktail dress. The British sweetheart accessorized in all black with a tiny clutch, black blazer and pumps. Kate wore sheer black tights to add a little warmth to her ensemble.
The beautiful bride-to-be was a vision in red while visiting the St. Andrews University in Scotland. Kate donned a bold hued Luisa Spagnoli skirt suit with sheer black tights and knee-high suede boots. Middleton looked stylishly classy in wrist-length leather gloves with red piping.
No wardrobe is complete without a classic trench coat, and if you’re lucky enough to be future royalty, a Burberry one will suit you just fine. Kate looked extra fashion savvy in a crisp ecru trench with a subtle hem ruffle while visiting Ireland. The princess-to-be wore her favorite black suede pumps and sheer tights.
When Michelle Obama came to visit, it was obviously going to be a battle of political fashionistas! Michelle opted for color while Kate stayed prim in a tan dress by another high street fave, Reiss. We’ll call it for Kate since her dress sold out just hours after its debut.
Kate looked elegant overlooking the balcony of Buckingham Palce in a pure white Alexander McQueen Resort 2011 double-breasted coat. The regal coat, which emphasized her slender waist, was a sophisticated choice for the Trooping the Colour parade for the Queen’s birthday.
Kate was a vision in a silver coat at the Order Of The Garter Service. She teamed the luxe embroidered coat with a matching cowl neck dress, a flourished spectator and gray suede pumps.
Kate was spotted at Wimbledon in a chic white silk Temperley London Moriah dress. The elegant white dress nipped in at the waist to show off Kate’s svelte figure. A chain bracelet with a crowned C charm and nude envelope clutch finished off her stylish attire.
Kate continued to dazzle fashion fans in a simple but chic purple Issa dress. The draped detail around the waist hugged the Duchess’ slender frame just perfectly. She accessorized the look with a black satin clutch and black pumps. To top it all off, Kate wore a maple leaf brooch—a lovely gesture to all her Canadian fans.
The Duchess always looks ravishing in blue. She debuted an elegant Erdem dress from the designer’s pre-Fall collection. The frock was chic and elegant, with intricate lace detailing on the bodice. Kate finished off the look with luxurious curls.
