Daniel D. Veniez: It's Not a (Liberal) Party Without Bob
Last week I dropped in to see Bob Rae at his Parliament Hill office. We were alone, and he was in a very reflective mood. I left with the sense that he had made up his mind not to seek the permanent leadership of the Liberal Party. After hearing the news, while I have great respect for his decision, I am disappointed. I had not decided whom to support in the upcoming leadership campaign. I'll make that decision when I know who is in the race. I hope that many good people will stand. But I do know this: The race will be less interesting and less substantive without Bob Rae in it.
Supriya Dwivedi: Heil Hyperbole! Montreal Protesters Are Fighting the Gestapo!
The student protest movement has been rife with hyperbole and misconstrued comparisons since its inception. Thus, it should in fact come as no surprise that the protesters have now taken to making links between the Montreal police and the Nazi regime. Peter Worthington: Why I'm Glad the British PM Left His Daughter at a Pub
It's kind of reassuring to think of the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, and his wife, having a family outing with the kids, and forgetting their daughter Nancy in a pub. It is sort of mindful of the days when heads of state could mingle safely with the people, and without the constant need for high-alert security.
Zach Paikin: Bob Rae: A Class Act Bows Out Gracefully
In what must have been a very difficult decision, interim Liberal leader Bob Rae has decided not to throw his hat into the ring as the party approaches its 2013 leadership convention. His decision not to seek the leadership of the Liberal Party has increased the chances that the party will be able to reinvent itself and focus on what counts: A classy move by a classy guy.
Bruce Hyer: Will MPs Show the Courage and Independence Needed to Stop Bill C-38?
Parliament has never seen such an all-encompassing bill as C-38 in its history. The government has shut down debate in Parliament and refuses to split the bill to allow for proper scrutiny. Ultimately, whether this terrible bill passes or not depends on the mettle of individual Conservative MPs. I hope that Greg Rickford, David Wilks, and their colleagues have the courage to stand for their constituents' interests and vote against their party. The choice is theirs: Do they want to make a difference as MPs, or go down in history as trained seals rubber stamping a party line?
