BREAKING: Bob Rae NOT Running For Liberal Leadership

Wednesday, June 13, 2012
Bob Rae won't be running for the Liberal leadership after all.

The party's interim chief will stay on until a new permanent leader is chosen, but will not launch a bid of his own.

Rae will make the announcement later today.

The Liberal party's national board of directors is holding a conference call Wednesday night to vote on timelines and rules for the coming leadership race.

Supriya Dwivedi: Heil Hyperbole! Montreal Protesters Are Fighting the Gestapo!
The student protest movement has been rife with hyperbole and misconstrued comparisons since its inception. Thus, it should in fact come as no surprise that the protesters have now taken to making links between the Montreal police and the Nazi Regime. In a picture that went viral, students are shown to be giving the Nazi salute. I suppose the real irony here is that after weeks of the punditry slamming the students for being predominantly from arts majors such as sociology, anthropology and history, the students have successfully proven they know very little regarding all three.
Dan Froomkin: The Obama Administration Is Criminalizing Investigative Reporting
Criminally investigating the kinds of leaks that are the bread and butter of national security investigative reporting is a noxious overreaction by hyper-controlling government officials who don't want us to know what's being done in our name.
David Sack, M.D.: Time Traveling in the Wrong Direction
Georgia's witch hunt on unemployed drug users is re-stigmatizing addiction and re-implementing the failed war on drugs. Instead of moving forward with policies based on what we actually know about drug addiction, the state has turned the clock back a century.
Alison Bass: Hey Sailor! What Canada Can Teach the U.S. About Prostitution
Just as Canada has provided us with a model for affordable health care, our neighbors to the north may also be leading the way on another key issue: reducing the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitting diseases. A few months ago, a federal appeals court in Canada overturned laws against prostitution in the province of Ontario, arguing that criminalizing sex work increased the risks of violence against women and made it harder for them to practice safe sex. In the Netherlands, where prostitution has been legal since 2000 and decriminalized since the 1970s, the spread of HIV is the lowest in the developed world.
Peter Worthington: My Dog And I Pooh-Pooh Your Bag Ban
I found plastic bags enormously useful to have around -- not only for garbage at home, but also when walking the dog. How can plastic bags be banned? Who do those councilors think they are? Who'll police the ban? Surely not our cops. The plastic bag fiasco stands as another example of those in charge trying to improve on an issue, and going too far into an area they know little about, having done no research.
